    Owner:
Administered by State of Hawaii, State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Art in Public Places Program, 250 South Hotel Street, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813
Located Halawa High Security Facility, 99-909 Moanalua Road, Honolulu, Hawaii
    Provenance:
Formerly located Oahu High Security Service Center, Garden, Honolulu, Hawaii
    Remarks:
State Foundation records from 1991 listed location as Oahu High Security Service Center; 1993 SOS! report lists owner as Halawa High Security Facility. According to the artist, because of the placement of the sculpture at the prison, "he wanted to combine the idea of compassion of Buddhism with Polynesian polytheism. The face in relief represents a bodhisatva, the enlightened one who stays back to assist all others in realizing their potential for enlightenment." Satoshi Nakaue assisted in landscaping and installation. Nearby plaque reads: State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Art in Public Places/"Compassionate Hina"/Ceramic, 1980/by/Victor Kobayashi/State of Hawaii, Dept. of Acctg & Gen. Ser.
