    Description: 
    John William Mackay stands wearing a shirt, pants, and boots. He holds a pick axe, head to the ground, with his proper left hand. He holds another object in his proper right hand. He stands atop an inscribed base. The front of the base has a bronze plaque with a relief globe showing North and South America. One side of the base has a bronze relief plaque depicting an ore mill in Virginia City, Nevada. The other side of the base has a bronze relief plaque featuring an overview of Virginia City, Nevada.

    Remarks: 
    Presented by Marie Louise Mackay and Clarence H. Mackay in 1908. The cost was $30,000. John William Mackay, 1831-1902, was an Irish immigrant who made a fortune mining the Comstock Lode of Virginia City, Nevada. He later co-founded the Commercial Cable Company and organized the Postal Telegraph Cable Company.
