Remarks:
The pole is a replica of a totem pole carved by an unknown
Tlingit
artist which was originally installed in 1899. The original pole, taken from a village in Alaska, was found to have dry rot in 1938. The United States Forest Service sponsored the carving of the replica pole in 1939. A nearby plaque indicates that the Pioneer Building, Pergola and Totem Pole were designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1977 by the National Park Service.
