    Remarks:
The sculpture commemorates Dr. Jose P. Rizal, a Filipino writer and poet who was accused of conspiring against Spain during that country's occupation of the Philippines in the late nineteenth century and of fomenting the revolution that started in August 1896. He died at the age of 35 by a Spanish firing squad and is now regarded as the "First Filipino" by many of his countrymen. The Filipino Society of Hawaii, Inc. was responsible for raising the funds to create the sculpture and the Order of the Knights of Rizal held a dedication ceremony for Dr. Rizal on the grounds of the Philippine Consulate on Dec. 30, 1983.
