Description:
A female figure, representing the Republic, stands dressed in a cinched tunic and outer cape with a laurel wreath adorning her head. She holds a palm leaf in her raised proper right hand while her proper left hand grasps the hilt of a broad sword that hangs downward. The figure is placed atop a base that is decorated at its front with a relief bust of William McKinley shown in profile. The figure and base surmount a circular four-stepped platform.

Remarks:
President Roosevelt broke the ground for the monument honoring William McKinley on May 13, 1903. The monument was erected by the people of San Francisco in 1904 at a cost of $40,000.
