    Description: 
    A male figure and female figure facing each other, doing a Mexican hat dance. Dressed in a multi-colored Spanish folk dress, the female figure has her hands on her hips and holds her skirt up. The male figure, predominantly green in coloring, has his hands behind his back. The sculpture is placed atop a circular base.

    Remarks: 
    Commissioned by the U.S. General Services Administration under its Art-in-Architecture program at a cost of $57,000. The sculpture proved to be controversial after its installation. Members of the county's Human Relations Commission petitioned to have the sculpture draped and removed as they felt the sculpture had physical exaggerations, "incorrect" costumes, form-fitting clothing, and incorrect skin color. IAS files contain related articles from the Los Angeles Times, Aug. 5, 1987, pg. F-1, F-4; Aug. 7, 1991, pg. F-3; and The San Diego Union, Aug. 3, 1991, pg. C-1, C-5; and Nov. 13, 1991, B-1, B-5. The San Diego Union articles describe the controversy surrounding the sculpture. IAS files contain a copy of the petition to remove the sculpture, GSA News Release dated Aug. 2, 1991; and GSA Arts, Winter 1992.
