Bank of Hawaii, 111 South King Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813
    Provenance:
Formerly located Bank of Hawaii, Bishop Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 1921-1969.
    Remarks:
This relief was comissioned in 1926 with the buildling of the Bank of Hawaii's first main branch on Bishop Street at the corner of King Sreet. The building's architect was Bertram G. Goodhue and Associates which had a long relationship with the artist Lee Oskar Lawrie. The relief is one of two by Lawrie that were installed on the exterior between the upper and lower sections of the windows along the King Street side of the first main branch bank building. In 1969, the reliefs were relocated and brought indoors with the building of the new main branch and tower building at 111 South King Street. IAS files contain illustrations of the first main branch on Bishop Street showing the location of the reliefs on the exterior of the building. Included among the illustrations is a painted mural in the current bank branch showing the historic first main branch on Bishop Street. IAS files also contain an excerpt from the Lee Lawrie Papers at the Library of Congress, Manuscript Division, showing photos of Lawrie's models for six reliefs, though only two were realized.
