    Remarks:
Bishop Frederic Baraga (1797-1868) was an Austrian-born priest who performed missionary work among the American Indians in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota in the first half of the nineteenth century. He was known as the "Snowshoe Priest" because he traveled to his five missions frequently, often donning snowshoes to make the journey in winter. In 1853, he became the first consecrated bishop of Upper Michigan. IAS files contain brochures from the Shrine.
