Description:
Full-length portrait of Armand Jean du Plessis Cardinal Richelieu. He wears elaborate 17th century
dress
. His proper right arm is extended and his proper right hand rests on an elongated walking stick. His head is turned to the proper left. A cape is slung over his proper left shoulder and arm and a sword rests on his proper left hip. His proper left hand is gloved and holds the other glove. There is a bollard near his proper left foot and a post behind his proper left leg. He has a goatee, moustache and wears a cross with the Holy Spirit on it. The Holy Spirit also appears on the back of his cloak. He wears a cardinal's skullcap and ring. The bronze sculpture stands on a bronze self-base which resembles wooden planks.

Remarks:
The sculpture was purchased at auction from the estate of J.R. and Evalyn Walsh McLean in 1948 by the present owner's grandfather, Brandon Tanner. It was moved to the family estate, Paxton Estate, in Richmond at that time. Since 1948, ownership of the sculpture has passed through the Tanner family.
