Remarks:
Smokey the Bear was crafted for the first Celebrate Wellington Day on September 20, 1992. The sculptor donated Smokey the Bear to the Friends of Wellington, who presented the bear to the Wellington State Park. Students employed under the Summer Work Grant waterproofed, painted, and prepared a place to display the bear. The base, legs, body, and head of the bear were all carved from a single log; the arms were carved separately and attached by bolts. The hat is a separate piece of wood and the brim was made from two boards. Smokey the Bear was vandalized twice in 1993. The bear's arm and his shovel were stolen, but have been replaced.
