    Description: 
    A coal miner wearing a hard hat with a light attached, a waist-length jacket, gloves with mid-forearm cuffs, loose fitting pants that are strapped tightly around the ankles, safety style boots with steel toes and flaps over the laces, and a belt with small pouches at the rear. He has a lunch box tucked under his proper left arm. He appears to be stepping forward with his proper right foot. He wears a belt with buckles at the front and small pouches at the rear. The sculpture is on an eight-sided base. A concrete pad extends 56 inches beyond the base and serves as a walkway around the memorial. A granite monolith with inscription is to the right of the sculpture and base.

    Inscription on granite monolith, to the proper right of the miner reads: SARDAC/SANDY RIVER DISTRICT ACTION/CORP. PLANNED AND CO-ORDINATED/THIS MEMORIAL TO HONOR ALL/COAL MINERS OF McDOWELL CO./WV. PAID FOR BY COAL MINERS,/THEIR FAMILIES, FRIENDS, LOVE ONES, AND FUNDS RAISED BY SARDAC./ACTIVE MEMBERS RESPONSIBLE FOR/THIS MEMORIAL WERE/(List of fifteen names)/ERECTED MAY 8, 1992. The site for this memorial was donated by Georgia-Pacific Railroad. IAS files contain a related article from the Bluefield Daily Telegraph (Bluefield, WV), Aug. 9, 1992. The statue includes the names of more than 400 McDowell County coal miners and was funded by the community. The project was coordinated by the Sandy River District Action Corp (SARDAC).
