Interior scene depicting a figure of a young woman seated at a table on which there is a book binding press. Light from a window on the right falls across her hands and face as she works on binding a book. In the background ther are paintings and drawings hanging on the wall and stacked against the wall.

The model for the woman is Lillie B. Gobel (later Cooksey), who was born in Brookville, Indiana on Feb. 28, 1887 and died in Brookville in 1952. Her daughter, Beulah Cooksey McCarty (born Brookville, 1909, died San Antonio, TX 1990), acquired the painting about 1960. She gave it to her son Wendell McCarty (born Brookville 1934) in the early 1970s. The painting is listed in "Catalogue of Paintings by John Ottis Adams Memorial Exhbition" published for the Oct. 1927 exhibition held at the John Herron Art Institute.
