Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776, (painting).
    Artist:
    Trumbull, John, 1756-1843, painter.

Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776, (painting).
    Dates:

    Image
    Medium:
    Oil on canvas.
    Dimensions:
    72 1/4 x 108 in. (183.5 x 274.3 cm).
    Description:
History painting showing the committee that worked on the document presenting Thomas Jefferson's draft to Congress. Although the date in the title is July 4, 1776, the event depicted actually took place on June 28, 1776. Trumbull decided to depict the entire committee presenting the document rather than a single spokesperson, which would have been accurate. In the scene, Thomas Jefferson stands in the middle holding the document in front of a seated John Hancock, who was president of Congress. Jefferson is surrounded by the other members of the committee, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and Benjamin Franklin. In the background are the forty-eight members of Congress.
