Description:
This ceramic tile mural created with the assistance of community teenagers consists of images representing the cultural heritage of Puerto Rico and the Villa Victoria housing development. The mural includes portraits of historical figures such as Pedro Albizu Campos, Emeterio Betances, Agueybana, Roberto Clemente and others, as well as children, teens, and adults from the Villa Victoria community. Among the scenes depicted is a battle between the Spanish conquistadors and the Taino Indians; a dancing couple dressed in traditional attire; the Holy Cross Cathedral; Villa Victoria; and images representing the negative influence of drugs in the community. The ceramic mural is mounted inside a narrow wood frame that is attached to the wall of the Villa Victoria power station.

Remarks:
The mural was funded through a Fund for the Arts grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts. The Arte y Cultura Dept. of I.B.A. coordinated the mural project in an effort to provide the youth of Villa Victoria housing development with a means of artistic expression. Technical direction was provided by two Latino community artists, Nora Valdez and Roberto Chao, who worked with a group of Villa Victoria teenagers to create the sculpture.
The following inscriptions appear in Spanish on the mural: Let us know how to fight for our honor and our liberty. The clay in this mural was made by neighbors and groups from the Villa Victoria. A gift from the hispanic community to this and future generations. IAS files contain a handout titled "'On the Wall' Mural Project" from I.B.A.
