The sculpture was commissioned in 1990 by River West, Inc. development corporation as part of improvements for the housing subdivision known as Natoma Station. The sculpture was commissioned through a grant from the Art in Public Places Foundation. This piece was inspired by a plague of crickets the artist witnessed on a visit to Texas.
