    Description: 
    A three-tiered fountain of Victorian design with images representing Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, Tidewater lands, and agricultural farmland. The first (lowest) tier depicts striped bass, spot, croaker, crabs and oysters, and a terrapin, in their natural habitat in the Chesapeake Bay. The second (middle) tier portrays a great blue heron, a family of black ducks, swamp sparrows, a killdeer, a frog, and a terrapin in the marsh land surrounding the Bay. The third (top) tier represents the agricultural uplands, with corn, tobacco, and white oak leaves. The Maryland State shield is included on the east and west sides. The fountain is set within a circular basin.

    Remarks: 
    The fountain was erected by the Governor's Mansion Foundation at a cost of $169,000 which was privately funded. Victorian design was chosen to blend with the Governor's Mansion. Landscape design was by Jay Graham, Pearse O'Doherty, and Tish Tyson, all of Graham Landscape Architecture of Annapolis, Maryland. The fountain was cast by David A. Beard of Historical Arts & Casting. IAS files contain a dedication program; an information sheet from Graham Landscape Architecture of Annapolis, entitled "Design Background to the Governor's Mansion Fountain"; and newspaper articles from The Washington Post: April 3, 1990, pg. E1, E2; April 7, 1990, pg. 1, B1, B4 (with discussion of the dedication); The Capital (Annapolis, Maryland), April 7, 1990 (with discussion of the dedication); and The Baltimore Sun, Nov. 25, 1993.
