    Remarks:
Thomas Kennedy was commissioned to construct "The Ascent" in conjunction with the renovation of Portland High School in 1991. The artist drew inspiration for the sculpture from a quotation entitled "Portals" by Anna E. Richardson, Class of 1930, found in a 1930 issue of the high school's yearbook. According to the artist, "the group ascending the wall combines individual effort with a shared struggle over obstacles, which requires mutual effort, guidance, support and assistance. The struggle and effort toward a goal with new vistas, future hopes and dreams, as a result of that effort, is like the training that is the golden key of dreams, hopes, and aims." Nearby plaque reads: THE ASCENT/ARTIST: THOMAS K. KENNEDY/COMMISIONED (sic) BY/PORTLAND HIGH SCHOOL/1991. IAS files contain the artist's proposal for sculpture and other related materials.
