    Description: 
    A male pioneer, dressed in a long, loose-fitting jacket, shirt, leather trousers, and wide-brimmed hat, stands with a whip folded over his proper left shoulder while grasping a rifle with his proper left hand. The statue is placed atop a stone and brick base which rests on a stepped area surrounded by a number of benches.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was commissioned for the newly built plaza. Both were a gift of the Dutton-Lainson Company to the citizens of Hastings on the 106th year of the company's founding. IAS files contain a related brochure about the plaza and newsclipping from Hastings Tribune, vol. 87, no. 174 (April 24, 1992), pg. 1-2. The sculpture was cast in 30 pieces. Fifty small models were cast from the model and sold.
