Set of four abstract pieces designed to create a "mini sculpture park" are created out of multi-colored, welded aluminum. The installation incorporates the elements that have contributed to Pittsburgh's development: a paddle wheel, symbolizing the rivers; a crucible, representing the metal processed in the river valleys; the Golden Triangle, representing business and finance; and Penn's Woods symbolizing the natural resources of the region. The four pieces are positioned in an oval arrangement.

    Remarks:
Inscription on plaque embedded in brick pavement near sculpture reads: George Sugarman (American, born 1912)/"PITTSBURGH VARIATIONS," 1984/Painted aluminum/Commissioned by the Hillman Fund/of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development/Conceived as a "Sculpture Park" within a "Sculpture Park," the varied elements that have contributed to/Pittsburgh's growth are represented by forms/which symbolize a paddlewheel (the rivers), a crucible/(primary metals), the Golden Triangle (business and/finance), and Penn's Woods (natural resources)/Collection of Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute
Sculpture was commissioned by the Hillman Fund of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development. IAS files contain several press releases produced by the City of Pittsburgh's Citiparks; Karl J. Stutski & Associates, Inc.; and the Carnegie Institute, many of which describe the Allegheny Landing project and other sculptures installed at that site. This sculpture was offered as a gift to the Carnegie Institute's Museum of Art collection through the Allegheny Conference on Community Development. Carnegie then placed the sculpture on permanent loan to the City of Pittsburgh so it could be installed at Allegheny Landing. Carnegie Institute will maintain the sculptures with the aid of a Public Art Fund to be financed by contributions from corporations, foundations, and individuals and administered by The Pittsburgh Foundation. Graffiti visible in the photos on file in the Inventories, was removed on August 3, 1995.
