    CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA.
    Description: 
    The stone is carved in relief with a shield flanked by two female figures, the one on the right holding a cornucopia, and the one on the left holding a small scythe. The figures lean against the shield, which is carved with an image of a sailing ship and a plow. The scales of justice are carved above the shield. Above the female figures there is an eagle with its wings spread, and an olive branch held in one claw and three arrows held in the other claw. In its beak, the eagle carries a banner incised with DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE PHILADELPHIA JULY 4TH 1776. The outer edges of the stone are carved with an elaborate border of leaves and ribbons, with bunches of leaves in each corner. Along the bottom edge, the stone is carved in relief with an inscription reading: CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA.

    Remarks: 
    One of 193 commemorative stones set into the interior walls of the Washington Monument. The stones were donated by states, cities, towns, organizations, individuals, and foreign countries in honor of George Washington. The Corporation of the City of Philadelphia donated the stone, which is located at the 180 ft. level.
