Description:
Seventy-five manhole covers located on a pedestrian walk in an eleven block area. The relief images on the covers are images of the
Minnesota
state flower, fish, bird, tree, grain, and fruit. The eleven different designs depict a Lady Slipper, a Walleye, a Northern Pike, a Loon, a Norway Pine, Wild Rice, Apples, Corn, Wheat, Oats, and a Timberwolf. The title "Hail
Minnesota
" is the state motto.

Remarks:
The total commission was for seventy-five manhole covers. Forty covers at 26 inches in diameter were commissioned by the City of Minneapolis, Nicollet Mall Implementation Board. Thirty-five covers at 29 inches in diameter (with a wider rim) were commissioned by the Northern States Power Company. Although the covers are unsigned, the covers are inscribed with the artist's initials, a logo, or a name. IAS files contain a publication of the Nicollet Mall Implementation Board, Summer 1992.
