Description:
An allegorical female figure representing the state of
Michigan
stands along side a rectangular inscription block. She stands on the top two steps in proper right profile with head bowed. Her proper left foot is raised, resting on the top step, as she rests her proper left arm on top of the block. She wears a veil-like head covering that extends down her back and a heavily draped, sleeveless gown and sandals. She holds a palm frond in her proper right hand. The sculpture is mounted upon a low base with rough-hewn sides.

The sculpture cost approximately $6,000. It was installed by the State of
Michigan
in memory of
Michigan
soldiers and sailors who were imprisoned at Andersonville during the Civil War. The sculpture was designed and fabricated by Lloyd Brothers of Toledo, Ohio.
