Washington Monument Commemorative Stone: Massachusetts, (sculpture). Artist:  Unknown, sculptor. Title:  Washington Monument Commemorative Stone: Massachusetts, (sculpture). Dates:  1850s. Digital Reference:  Medium:  Quincy granite. Dimensions:  6 x 6 ft. Inscription:  MASSACHUSETTS. Description:  The stone is carved in relief with a circular emblem depicting a Native American, his head turned to the left, his gaze directed toward a star, a quiver of arrows over his left shoulder, and an arrow held in his left hand. He is encircled with a decorative border design topped by an arm and hand holding a sword. Below the decorative border design there is a banner reading ENCE PETIT PLACIDAM SUB LIBERTATE QUIETEM. The lower edge the stone is carved in relief with letters spelling out MASSACHUSETTS. The stones were donated by states, cities, towns, organizations, individuals, and foreign countries in honor of George Washington. The State of Massachusetts donated the stone, which is located at the 70 ft. level.
