Washington Monument Commemorative Stone: Brazil, (sculpture). Artist:  Unknown, sculptor. Title:  Washington Monument Commemorative Stone: Brazil, (sculpture). Dates:  1878. Installed 1885. Digital Reference:  Medium:  Stone, possibly with gold leaf or gold paint. Dimensions:  3 ft. 3 in. x 3 ft. 3 in. Inscription:  BRAZIL/1878 Description:  The stone is carved in relief with a circular motif featuring a shield adorned with a ring of stars and a globe. Above the shield there is a jeweled crown, and below the shield there are two olive branches leaves tied with a ribbon. An inscription carved in relief reads BRAZIL along the top edge of the stone, and 1878 along the bottom edge. The corners of the stone are adorned with circles and triangles carved in relief. The stones were donated by states, cities, towns, organizations, individuals, and foreign countries in honor of George Washington. Brazil donated the stone, which is located at the 190 ft. level.
