Description:
A large relief-covered Celtic cross, in the center of which is a circular Emblem of Eternity containing two crouching figures with hands joined and raised in supplicatory unity. Between the hands is a serpent, the symbol of temptation.
Depictions on the front relief panels are as follows
--
(Vertical panels) Bottom front panel: Peace of Death as the herald of death bearing a trumpet and palm branch; Second front panel: Redemption of Labor as a stoic digger annoyed by a bird of prey; Third front panel: Vigilance as a boatman steering his boat through rough seas; Fourth front panel: Immortality as the Phoenix rising from ashes; Top front panel: Universal Love as a heart within a winged globe. (Horizontal panels) Front left panel: Hope as a winged blindfolded head; Front right panel:
Fear
as a chained head and hands.
Depictions on the back relief panels are as follows

(Vertical panels) Bottom back panel: Faith as an ancient ship at sea and a coat of arms framed in a shamrock; Second back panel: Charity as a winged figure seated on a lion to signify the power of charity over misfortune symbolized by a emaciated youth; Third back panel: Courage as Hercules strangling a serpent, the emblem of evil; Fourth back panel: Gentleness as a virgin holding a dove; Top back panel: Love as a flaming heart. (Horizontal panels) Back left panel: Hope as clasped hands with a rope and anchor; Back right panel: Faith as hands grasping a cross.

Remarks:
The cross was erected in memory of General William J. Sewell. For additional information see Margaret Calder Hayes Erikkson's "Three Alexander Calders: A Family Memoir," Middlebury, VT, 1977. IAS files contain a copy of the artist's sketch of the cross dated 1901 which contains notes on the symbols illustrated in each relief.
Translations of the Latin inscriptions on the cross are as follows --Bottom front panel: "Death is peace"; second front panel: "Life is labor"; third front panel: "Watch"; fourth front panel: "Rich through or by the hands"; bottom back panel: "Stout ship, Deep sea, Faith rides staunchly"; third back panel: "Bold and wary."
