Inscription:  (On sculpture:) Herbert Adams MCMXXVIII (On front of base:) TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE/WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/THE WORLD WAR - 1914-1918/THE CITY OF FITCHBURG/DEDICATES THIS MONUMENT (On bronze plaque, west side of base:) These Gave Their Lives (list of 63 who died during the war) signed Description:  A loosely draped female figure holding a furled flag in her proper left hand stands atop a tall square base. Her proper right hand is extended, bestowing honor on those who died during World War I. On her armored breast plate is the insignia of the United States. As she walks, her cloak is carried back by the breeze creating the effect of wings. A list of the names of the war dead appearing on the base plaque is included in IAS files. Charles Platt was the architect who designed the base. The monument was restored in 1986. IAS files contain an article from the Fitchburg Sentinel, Nov. 12, 1928; a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire, and a checklist from the files of the Fitchburg Historical Society.
