Description:
A sculpture composed of an idealized, larger-than-life, nude male and female, with arms raised over their heads, ascending as if in flight amidst a group of three swans, symbolizing eternal life and freedom from material things. The humans and swans are supported by tall, pointed shafts that point upwards from the center of the base, suggesting a breaking out from earthly concerns. The sculpture is mounted on a circular polished base with a top that slopes down slightly from the center where the sculpture projects. The base is encircled by plantings and brick curbing.

Remarks:
The sculpture cost $100,000. Funds for the project were raised through various benefits, including a performance at the Birmingham Theater, and through contributions from Birmingham community members. The sculpture is a second cast; the first was made for the 1964 New York World's Fair. The artist donated the sculpture for the City's 50th anniversary. Nearby plaque on marker reads: "THE FREEDOM OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT"/MARSHALL.M.FREDERICKS.SCULPTOR/DEDICATED SEPTEMBER 7, 1986/WITH GRATEFUL ACKNOWLEDGMENT TO/ALL WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THIS PROJECT/(Lists of benefactors and patrons)/ORIGINAL DESIGNS AND SCULPTURAL MODELS/WERE DONATED BY THE SCULPTOR.
The sculpture was cleaned and waxed in the Summer of 1993 by Venus Bronze Works. IAS files contain a transcription of names on nearby plaque; a dedication program; and related articles from the Detroit Free Press, Oct. 2, 1955, pg. 12D; and July 23, 1986.
