(On front panel of obelisk, below pediment:) TO THE CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS/OF/WESTMORELAND/WHO FELL IN DEFENSE OF/VIRGINIA./AND IN THE CAUSE OF/CONSTITUTIONAL LIBERTY./THIS MONUMENT/IS ERECTED IN GRATITUDE AND LOVE/BY/THE WOMEN OF WESTMORELAND/ERECTED/BY THE/LADIES MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION/OF/WESTMORELAND CO. VA. (On the other three sides of the obelisk are panels listing 149 names) (On back of obelisk, above name panel:) 1876 Founder's mark appears.
    Description: 
    Stone obelisk stands atop a three-stepped base. The obelisk is topped with a sculptural element, possibly a flame. The lower part of the obelisk has a carved pediment on all four sides. Above the pediment on the front is a relief of two cannon flanking a pyramid of cannonballs.

    Remarks: 
    The monument was originally located across the street from its present position. It was moved in July 1930 to make room for construction. At that time ownership of the monument passed from the Ladies Memorial Association of Westmoreland County to Westmoreland County. IAS files contain transcriptions of names listed on panels.
