    Remarks:
Friedrich Hecker (1811-1881) was a German nationalist who fought to establish a German republic during the 1848 revolution. When the revolution failed, Hecker came to the United States. After landing in New York, he traveled to Cincinnati where he founded the nation's first Turner Society. In 1960, Hecker supported the 9th Ohio Volunteer Regiment which was made up of Cincinnati's Germans, many of whom were Turner Society members. When the Civil War broke out, Hecker joined as a private, but quickly rose to the rank of brigadier general. The translation for the German text on the base is: With word and deed for the freedom of people in the old and new fatherlands.
The monument has been moved from its former location within Washington Park where it was surrounded by a low, cast-iron fence. The Cincinnati Park Board's "Art in the Park," gives the sculpture media as limestone and the SOS! survey gives the media as white marble.
