A cast bronze relief depicting a young woman's aspirations in terms of family and progress. On the left side of the relief is a woman wearing a bonnet and a dress with a full skirt, standing before a covered wagon. She cradles a toddler on her proper left hip, while an older sibling is shielded behind her proper right side. To the right of the woman is a man with his proper right hand reaching for the toddler's hand. Behind the man to the right are two oxen with chicken at their feet. On the far right side of the relief, several sheep graze while geese fly in the sky above them. Below the sheep, a young girl sleeps amid a pile of leaves. The relief is mounted against an exterior wall under an overhang of the building. Some of the geese fly off the relief and are mounted on the wall beside the relief.

The reliefs were commissioned for the Administration Building which in 1968 became the Literature, Science, and the Arts Building. The architectural firm for the building was Harley, Ellington and Day. The inscription on the wall below the left corner of relief reads: THE DREAM OF THE YOUNG GIRL. IAS files contain: an excerpt from Ellen A. Plummer and Frederick W. Mayer's brochure "The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Campus Outdoor Sculpture," University of Michigan, c. 1993 (which gives date of sculpture as 1947); and an unpublished excerpt from Einar Kvaran's "An Annotated Inventory of Outdoor Sculpture in Washtenaw County," 1989.
