The name Numa is from Numa the lion in "Tarzan of the Apes" by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The lion was chosen as the mascot of Fort Smith Junior College, later renamed the Unversity of Arkansas at Fort Smith. The sculpture was commissioned with funding from the estates of Pearl D. Raney and Sally McSpadden Boreham.
