    Description:
A bust of Monsignor Jean Baptiste Henri Victor Milette dressed in clerical garb. He wears eye glasses and a crucifix on a necklace. The bust is placed atop a tapered base that is ornamented with relief plaques on its back and sides, which describe the work of Monsignor Milette as founder of a school, orphanage, and hospital. An inscribed plaque in the shape of an open scroll surrounded by a bronze wreath, branches, and ribbons decorates the lower front of the base. The relief plaque on the rear of the base depicts an interior scene of a classroom with Monsignor Milette seated at the center of a long table surrounded by children. The relief plaque on the side of the base depicts an interior scene of a hospital room with Monsignor Milette and a nurse standing near a bedridden patient with other patients in the background. The relief plaque on the other side of the base depicts an orphanage with adult figures and children placed in front of an arcade. In the center of the relief a female figure presents a young child to a nurse or nun.

    Remarks:
Monsignor Jean Baptiste Henri Victor Milette, 1842-1917, was born in Quebec, Canada. He was educated and ordained to the priesthood there and in November of 1871 was sent from Montreal to Nashua to take over the newly formed French-Canadian parish of Saint Aloysius (later to be known as St. Louis de Gonzague), the first French speaking parish in the city. Monsignor Milette built a church for St. Louis de Gonzague parish which was consecrated in 1873. During his pastorate, Mgr. Milette built a school and a convent for the teaching nuns. He also built an orphanage in 1901 and a hospital in 1906. At his death in 1917, the stores and mills of Nashua were closed for his funeral. Father C. S. Lacroix launched a campaign to have a suitable monument erected for Monsignor Milette and parishioners responded with large and small contributions. The commissioned sculpture cost $10,000. Despite heavy downpours, thousands of people, including Bishop George Albert Guertin, Governor Charles W. Tobey, and Mayor William F. Sullivan gathered on the day of the sculpture's dedication.
