    (On east side of shaft:) THEY SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES TO DEFEND OUR HOMES. THEY ARE OUR DEAD. WITH GRATEFUL HEARTS WE WILL REMEMBER THEM. (On west side of shaft:) THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE LAST WILL OF DR. THOMAS J. BAILEY, TO SHOW HIS LOVE FOR THE UNION AND ITS GALLANT DEFENDERS (On north side of shaft:) IN HONOR TO AND IN MEMORY OF THE CITIZENS AND VOLUNTEER SOLDIERS WHO WERE KILLED, AND DIED OF WOUNDS RECEIVED IN DEFENCE OF SPRINGFIELD, MO. AGAINST THE REBELS, JANUARY 8TH, 1863. (On south side of shaft:) "THE UNION, THE CONSTITUTION, AND THE ENFORCEMENT OF THE LAWS." A FAVORITE QUOTATION OF DR. T.J. BAILEY.     Description: 
    A stone figure of a Union soldier stands atop a tall slender marble shaft, his left arm folded across his chest, his right hand raised to his face, and his left leg forward. He holds his rifle in front of him on his right side, with his left hand holding the end of the barrel and the rifle butt resting by his right foot. The marble shaft is incised on all four side with inscriptions honoring Union soldiers who lost their lives during the Civil War.
