PAUL M./KELLERT, JEFFERSON FELLOW, ROGERS STATE COLLEGE (Plaques on the sides of the base contain quotes from Washington from his first inaugural address, Jan 8, 1790 and from Jan. 1, 1796) signed
    Description: 
    George Washington and his horse are depicted during a battle. Standing by his horse, Nelson, Washington looks in the direction of his outstretched proper right hand in which he holds a telescope. He holds a scabbard in his proper left hand. He wears a long coat, vest, ruffled shirt and trousers tucked into knee-high boots. Washington's cloak is thrown over his saddled horse. At their feet is a flagpole bearing the Continental flag, which is shot full of holes. The sculpture stands on a rectangular base which has the Presidential Seal.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was commissioned in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Constitution. The artist was then artist-in-residence at the College. The figure of Washington represents Democracy. IAS files contain related excerpt from the "Guidebook to Rogers State College," an article from the Claremore Daily Progress, Sept. 13, 1987; and copies of information from the vertical files of the University library.
