    Remarks:
Elizabeth Catherine Jeffries, the owner's great great grandmother, was born on April 5, 1813 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1837 she married Lawrence Sangston, and they made their home in Baltimore, Maryland, where they raised five daughters. Her husband became a member of the Maryland legislature during the Civil War and was arrested along with sixteen other elected officials, including the mayor of Baltimore, and was put in prison at Fort McHenry. They were southern sympathizers and were incarcerated to prevent them from voting to secede from the Union. Lawrence Sangston's handwritten "Bastilles of the North" describes the experiences of those months (this document was donated to the Maryland Historical Society). Elizabeth Jeffries Sangston died on Jan. 1, 1881.
The painting has descended in the family of the sitter; the current owner inherited the painting from her father, the sitter's great grandson, in 1985.
