    Remarks:
In 1950-1951, sculptor Roy E. King used his talents as a civil engineer to design and build a three story home for his family in Honolulu, Hawaii. Several of his artworks adorned the home including urns, grillwork, a carved mailbox door, and these carved koa wood valences installed over two large windows, one facing the ocean, and one facing Pauoa Valley. The artist sold the house in 1956, and the present owners have occupied the house for over 40 years. The valences still remain in place over the two windows. Roy E. King often used native Hawaiian plants as design elements in decorative carvings. The carved leaf and berry design on these valences can be compared to other leaf patterns on the artist's work at the Queen's Medical Center and at the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Honolulu.
