Inscription:  (On plaque on front of base:) THE/COMMONWEALTH/OF/MASSACHUSETTS/ERECTES THIS/MONUMENT IN/GRATEFUL MEMORY/OF HER/SOLDIERS AND SAILORS WHO DIED IN THE/DEPARTMENT OF/NORTH CAROLINA/1861-1865 (On plaque on north side of base: list of Massachusetts volunteer infantry regiments) (On plaque on south side of base: list of Massachusetts volunteer infantry regiments) Description:  A copper female figure dressed in classical drapery, with a laurel wreath on her head, and left hand holding a shield inscribed with AFTER LOYAL SERVICE UNION AND PEACE. The female figure stands atop a square granite base adorned with bronze inscription plaques honoring soldiers and sailors from Massachusetts who died during the Civil War.
