    Remarks:
The statue commemorates Sir John Franklin (1786-1847), an English Arctic explorer. His disappearance during an 1845-47 expedition, is credited with creating the impetus for 32 subsequent expeditions which resulted in the mapping of the then largest unchartered area of the world. The bust was a gift of BP North America, Inc. in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Alaskan statehood, as well as BP North America's 25th year of operations in Alaska. Plaques on rocks on either side of the bust have been removed. IAS files contain a related article from the Anchorage Municipal Libraries Journal, Aug. 1985.
