    Description: 
    The central themes represented in the pediment are: Justice, Power, Agriculture, and Mining. Near the apex of the pediment, an eagle with outstretched wings signifies power. Just below the eagle are the scales of Justice. On the proper right, seated, is a partially-clothed male figure representing a miner, with a mining car and shovel. On the proper left, is a seated female figure, representing Agriculture.

    Remarks: 
    IAS files contain nomination form for National Register of Historic Places Inventory. The courthouse was erected in the years 1894-1900 by the architectural firm of Yost & Packard. Mr. W. D. Priest designed and carved the pediment. IAS files contain citations to related newsclippings from Fairmont Free Press, dating from 1897-1900.
    Inscription on plaque above entrance door to main courthouse reads: 1897 ERECTED 1900/ARRON FURBEE - FESTUS DOWNS/MARCUS MORGAN/COMMISSIONERS OF MARION COUNTY, W.Va./C.E. MANLEY CLERK OF COURT/J.W. YOST F.L. PACKARD ARCHITECTS/T.L. BURCHINAL SUPET. OF CONSTRUCTION/J. WESTWATER C.A. ABERNATHY/CONTRACTORS.
