Description:
Bronze bust of Arctic explorer John Franklin. Franklin is wearing a uniform with buttons with anchors on them, medals on his chest, and roping on his shoulders. The bust sits on a pyramid-shaped base.

Remarks:
The statue commemorates Sir John Franklin (1786-1847), an English Arctic explorer. His disappearance during an 1845-47 expedition, is credited with creating the impetus for 32 subsequent expeditions which resulted in the mapping of the then largest unchartered area of the world. The bust was a gift of BP North America, Inc. in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Alaskan statehood, as well as BP North America's 25th year of operations in
Alaska
. Plaques on rocks on either side of the bust have been removed. IAS files contain a related article from the
Anchorage
Municipal Libraries Journal, Aug. 1985.
