    Remarks:
The memorial honors those from Winchendon who died in the Civil War. A fund was started for a Civil War Memorial in 1866 by the Old Veteran's Corps (later known as the Gilman C. Parker Post, G.A.R.). In 1889, the town contributed about $4,000 to supplement the $1,200 raised through contributions. The E. L. Smith & Company of Barre, Vermont was awarded the contract to build the monument and the Chicopee Bronze Works was contracted to cast the bronze figure. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire.
