    Remarks:
The background of the watering trough is not clear. The mask has been attributed to Louis St. Gaudens, although no documentation exists to confirm the attribution. The earliest mention of a water trough at this site appears in the July 24, 1854 minutes of the Laurel Hill Association, which cite an offer from a Mr. Albanola to present the association with such a gift. It was at least thirty years however, before the gift was received. The local community refers to the sculpture as the "trough of temperance." IAS files contain a related excerpt from "Stockbridge Story, 1739-1989," Stockbridge, MA: City of Stockbridge, 1989.
