    Description: 
    The monument contains a standing figure of a uniformed Civil War soldier with his proper left foot forward, holding the butt of his rifle parallel with his proper left foot. Both hands are on the barrel of the rifle, proper left over proper right. He is clean shaven and wears a cap and a belted overcoat with a hood. He carries a kit and a bayonet on his proper left hip. The soldier rests on a tall, multitiered base inscribed on all four sides.

    Remarks: 
    The monument was erected in memory of Union soldiers of the Civil War. The monument cost about $3,000, of which $500 was raised by the Joseph R. Toy Post No. 83, G.A.R., and the balance through contributions. One hundred ninety-four names are recorded on the monument, including seven names of African-American soldiers. Beckman's "Civil War Monuments," Washington: Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1978, pg. 14; and The Simsbury Sign Post (April 1990): pg. 6-7. IAS files contain an article from The Hartford Daily Courant, July 5, 1895, pg. 6, which discusses the dedication. IAS files also contain a transcription of the fifteen names and ranks on the southeast side of the base.
