    Remarks:
The monument honors Chief Andrew Montour, a Seneca Indian who, along with his brother John, helped whites settle this region. The sculpture replaces a previous cast figure erected in 1894 that was knocked over in a windstorm in 1948. The new statue cost $10,000, and pennies were collected from local school children for the base. IAS files contain the text of the plaque on the base, as quoted in correspondence from Mrs. Norman Phelps, dated Feb. 14, 1995. IAS files also contain related articles from the Crooked Lake Review (Hammondsport, New York), June 1993 and the Leader (New York), March 16, 1994.
