    Remarks:
This sculpture won a design competition held by the Minneapolis Arts Commission called Public Art Possibilities. The artist was inspired when she happened upon the excavation of the boulders during construction of the West River Parkway. Consulting with a geologist and a paleontologist, she determined that the limestone was 450 million years old and the sandstone was 1 billion years old. The fossils were identified as a cephalopod, an octopus-like creature. IAS files include the text of a nearby commemorative plaque which explains the background of the sculpture, the individual dimensions of the pieces, a survey form from the Commission which lists the project's donors, and a related article from the Skyway News (Minnesota), Sept.22, 1988. For related reading see the Public Art Possibilities Catalog from the Minneapolis Arts Commission.
