Remarks:
George F. Johnson came to Binghamton,
New
York
from Massachusetts in his twenties to work for the Lester Brothers Boot and Shoe Company. He later became head of the entire operation, which grew into the Endicott-Johnson Company, and became one of the area's largest employers. The monument was probably commissioned shortly after George F. Johnson's death in 1948 at the age of 91. Funding was provided through public donations. A bronze urn containing a scroll with more than 100,000 signatures of contributors to the memorial fund was placed within the stone structure on Aug. 24, 1951.
