Located South Main Street, in front of swimming pool, Chamberlain, South Dakota
    Provenance:
Formerly located American Island on the Missouri River, South Dakota
    Remarks:
Commissioned through the Works Progress Administration. These pieces were originally part of a group of fourteen sculptures, of which six remain. They were located at American Island Park, on the Missouri River, until the river dammed and the island was flooded. According to the book "Maka Teepee 1880 to Chamberlain 1980," these sculptures were created by Andre Boratko. South Dakota artist Oscar Howe is believed to have consulted on the project. For related reading, see "American Island: Gone but not Forgotten," by Gil Johnson and a scrapbook which belonged to Vern Duba; both available at the Cozard Memorial Library in Chamberlain. See also Works Progress Administration records and guidebooks which are available from the State Historical Society in Pierre, South Dakota.
