Remarks:
Sculpture is a cast by Gorham from the original located in the Virginia State Capitol at Richmond. Gorham was authorized to make the cast by the General Assembly of Virginia. The sculpture was installed on the east wall of Corcoran Hall in the 1930s, but was later moved indoors to the old library building at 2023 G Street. In the early 1970s it was relocated to the lower lobby of Lisner Auditorium. It was installed at its present site in May 1991 after conservation. IAS files contain a copy Ronald E. Heaton's "The Image of
Washington
, The History of Houdon's Statue" which describes the original
Washington
statue and the subsequent authorization of casts. IAS files also contain copies of a brochure describing the original statue located at the Virginia State Capitol and information from The
George

University
files on the various placements of the sculpture around the campus.
