Lieutenant Robert E. Smitherman stands in airman's dress, with cap and goggles, a leather jacket with upturned collar, and boots. He looks upward and holds a cigarette in his proper left hand. He hooks the thumb of his proper right hand on his belt and has a pair of gloves tucked under his proper right arm. A gun holster hangs from his belt on his proper right side. The figure stands in front of an exedra wall, with central identifying arch-shaped marker.
