    Description: 
    "Bronze abstract form, suggesting the figure in ribbon-like volumes and contours. The sculpture can be roughly divided into two major sections: the upper, abstract form, and a lower cylinder which acts as a base for the whimsical form above. The cylinder rests on a flat, square bronze base. The abstract form rests on a slightly curved horizontal bronze slab, which rests on a smaller, diamond-shaped volume."

    Remarks: 
    Gift of Mrs. Mark C. Steinberg. Cost $50,200. Seven casts were made of Joie de Vivre. Architect Frederick Dunn and landscape architect Harriet Bakewell planned the setting for the sculpture. A granite plaque set into concrete in the proper left corner of the pebblestone plaza is inscribed: "JOIE DE VIVRE"/JACQUES LIPCHITZ/SCULPTOR.
    IAS files contain copies of articles from St. Louis Globe-Democrat, April 17, 1962, which discusses the donation of funds to purchase the sculpture; St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Nov. 10, 1962, which discusses the dedication ceremony; and St. Louis Globe-Democrat, Nov. 21, 1965. IAS files also contain copies from unpublished 1969 mayor's report, "Public Art - St. Louis."
